World Water Day 2019 – SEZ promotes water projects

“Water and sanitation for all” is the motto of this year’s World Water Day. The Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) also supports projects by Baden-Württemberg groups that improve water supplies in countries in the global south.

A well for Youmtenga

Until now, Youmtenga did not have its own well. The village belongs to the municipality of Dourtenga in the southeast of Burkina Faso in West Africa. There has been a partnership between the Sahel community of Dourtenga and Brühl in Baden-Württemberg for years. Now the Förderkreis Dourtenga eV has built a well in Youmtenga with financial support from the SEZ. The approximately 150 school children in the village benefit directly from this because the well was built near the school. And of course the entire population of Youmtenga, the people finally have clean drinking water. Contaminated water is often the cause of gastrointestinal diseases.

And the boys and girls at the primary school in Pissiribouli can also be happy. Thanks to the active support from Baden-Württemberg, they have now received two new latrines. One for the girls, one for the boys. Improved hygiene makes a significant contribution to children's health.

Yanbeli now has its own water

So far, the residents of Yanbeli in Ethiopia have had to laboriously transport the water they need from the valley from a source several kilometers away in canisters to their village on the high plateau. With financial support from the SEZ and the Alpha-Bet Ethiopia association from Bruchsal, the residents of Yanbeli are now receiving a new well. The villagers have wanted this well for years. It will supply 2.000 residents with clean water, as well as the school where 900 boys and girls are taught, as well as the kindergarten and the infirmary. The hospital has had electricity from its own photovoltaic system for eight years now. Here too, the SEZ supported the Alpha-Bet association.

The Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation supports the program beffekt! Development cooperation projects at home and abroad. For this purpose, the SEZ receives funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg.

DOHUK PROJECT FUNDING SEZ

Solar power for Camp Mam Rashan in Dohuk

Recently, the 8.500 people in the Mam Rashan camp in the northern Iraqi province of Dohuk finally have electricity during the day.

This was made possible through funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The State Ministry provided around 400.000 euros in funding for the construction of the photovoltaic system, while around 200.000 euros came from the private sector - as donations in the form of discounted material resources and free labor.

“The project enjoys great attention in northern Iraq,” reports SEZ managing director Philipp Keil. “It is a very innovative project that contributes to significantly better care for the camp residents. And at the same time it is a good example that radiates far into the region and raises awareness among people in northern Iraq about clean energy.”

Work on the photovoltaic system at Camp Mam Rashan in Dohuk started at the end of 2017 together with the non-profit atmosfair gGmbH, which carried out the project. “atmosfair did a great job,” says Laurids Novak, who is responsible for project funding at the SEZ. “The whole thing was only possible to this extent and to this quality because we had great support on site, including from the team at Refugee Aid Essen.”

The Mam Rashan plant is designed to be easily expanded to meet a higher proportion of electricity demand. There are already considerations about this. The training of local maintenance staff and energy scouts, for example, were part of the project measures.

“For the SEZ, the photovoltaic system in Mam Rashan is an absolute pilot project. We have not yet had any other project of this size, because we normally support much smaller projects,” emphasizes Keil and adds: “In Mam Rashan, an attempt was made to provide humanitarian aid with a long-term perspective to combine perspective. And I think that was a success.” The experience with the project was very positive, everyone was willing to get involved – and “Mam Rashan is a blueprint for other camps.” The Mam Rashan camp is predominantly inhabited by Yazidi internally displaced people. In addition to the solar system for Mam Rashan, the state of Baden-Württemberg has supported other projects in Dohuk in northern Iraq. For example, a carpet factory was built on the edge of the Khanke refugee camp. Also in Khanke, a playground was built in a children's center on the edge of the camp with support from Baden-Württemberg. Other measures included the implementation of computer and English courses in collaboration with the Iraqi organization Women for Better Healthy Life (WFBH) and a pilot project to raise and fatten calves in a remote region outside Dohuk.

State increases funding to 1 million

Under the label “beffekt!”, the state of Baden-Württemberg is making one million euros available annually for development projects for the first time.

“We want to noticeably increase the state’s funding for civil society projects and significantly increase the great voluntary commitment in this area,” said State Minister Theresa Schopper, who is also chairwoman of the SEZ Board of Trustees.

“By increasing from 385.000 euros to one million euros per year in 2018 and 2019, we can make Baden-Württemberg’s relationships with our neighbors in Africa visible, consolidate and deepen them.” The increase is also possible through the support of the government factions in the become budget consultations.

For many years, the state of Baden-Württemberg has been supporting civil society organizations in financing development projects worldwide. Twice a year, the Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) advertises funding for domestic and international project work for this purpose. In addition, 2018 euros will be made available specifically for projects in the partner country Burundi in East Africa for 2019 and 250.000. The Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) coordinates the tenders, advises applicants and ensures quality standards. An independent expert committee appointed by State Secretary Schopper examines the project applications and selects the project applications to be funded.

“The state’s additional funding for ‘works!' are an upgrade of development cooperation in the country. “They give us the opportunity to support significantly more initiatives at home and abroad than is currently the case,” said Philipp Keil, Managing Director of the SEZ. “We want to use these funds wherever possible for innovative partnership-based social projects and exemplary lighthouse projects. The new funding line for projects in and related to the partner country of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Burundi, also contributes to strengthening and perpetuating the state partnership.” Another goal is to network the supported actors in the country and to make the commitment in the country more visible close. Lighthouse projects from each funding year will also be presented to the general public at an event in the future.

17Goals.de

“Poverty is not natural, it was created by humans and can therefore be overcome and eradicated through appropriate measures. The eradication of poverty is not an act of mercy, but of justice.” (Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Prize winner)

Eradicating global poverty is just one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. For the first time, the 2030 Agenda combines all three dimensions of sustainability – social, economic and ecological. It is something that all countries in the world strive for because the following applies: global challenges can only be solved together.

The #17Goals website makes the 2030 Agenda better known and presents various projects and initiatives that contribute to its implementation. In addition to numerous practical tips for everyday life, you also get to know news from politics, business and society. Whether self-made trash design for a sustainable lifestyle or wind energy from drones, a wide variety of ideas for climate protection are clearly presented. References to local practical examples such as poetry slams on the 17 goals also strengthen public awareness of the topic of sustainability and motivate readers to take their own action. They can immediately find out about timely, nationwide events related to the 2030 Agenda and take part in Rap for Refugees in Hamburg, the school cinema weeks in Hesse or the Vegginale in Hanover.

The big advantage of the website is that it primarily targets schoolchildren and students. By linking to the social media channels Instagram or Twitter, you can easily come across projects like the Advent calendar with 17 sustainable actions. At the same time, the 17 goals are discussed in a playful way at music festivals such as Lollapalooza and their realization is made more attractive.

The entire #17Goals project is carried out by Engagement Global on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It serves as a guide for every individual’s commitment to development policy.
