Palm oil is found in many everyday products – but its low price comes at a high social and ecological cost. In countries like Guatemala, people – especially women – suffer from land theft, environmental destruction, and exploitation. Many of them are fighting back. We examine the central role played by indigenous women from the Mayan Q'eqchi' communities in the resistance. Using concrete examples, we examine historical land conflicts and the consequences of the palm oil industry. We also ask: What responsibility does Germany bear – and how can we take action ourselves?
