For the indigenous Kukama people of Peru, the river is not just water, but a living being. It provides them with sustenance, absorbing their tears and laughter. What's more, beneath its surface live the Karuaras—the people of the river. This deep connection is threatened: oil leaks are destroying the river's ecological balance. The Kukama women are taking legal action to have the river recognized as a legal entity. A provocation for a world in which nature has become a commodity.
