Peru is one of the world's most resource-rich countries. Gold and silver were mined as early as Inca times and contributed to the wealth of the colonial power Spain. Today, Peru relies on mining as an important economic sector for the country's development. Consumption also affects us: We use gold for jewelry and as an investment. But how exactly are the raw materials mined in Peru? What environmental problems and social impacts do large-scale mining projects have? Using gold mining in Peru as an example, these questions and the role of consumers, companies, and politicians in the responsible use of these raw materials are addressed.
