FISH FARMING FOR A SCHOOL IN GATETE (RUMONGE)

The Gatete zone is particularly poor and is home mainly to Burundian refugees who have returned from Tanzania. Unfortunately, this much desired return has consequences for the peace between the returnees and the residents. For those who return no longer find the land they owned before they fled, now inhabited by those who remained behind. The AJMDP recognized the potential for conflict early on and founded a school together with parents in 2008. The school began an “upgrade program” for returnees to integrate them into the Burundian education system. This project not only improves the nutritional situation of the students in order to avoid dropping out of school, but it also has an integrative effect.
