The city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra throws 1.800 tons of waste onto the streets every day, of which less than 5% is recycled. It is mainly paper, cardboard and waste glass that pollute the streets when unused. There is no functioning garbage disposal system. There are currently around 2.000 families who carry out the process of collecting and recycling waste manually and in precarious conditions, which means they are unable to work efficiently in production and get a fair price when marketing the waste. Many people who have to feed their children by collecting and recycling waste have come together under the name “Red de Recolectores Santa Cruz” (Association of Garbage Collectors Santa Cruz). This project consists of the provision of the necessary recycling machines, a training component and the formation of strategic alliances for the above-mentioned association, which enable a significant improvement in this process.
