WEAVING DREAMS AND MAKING FUTURES – PROMOTING INCOME OF MARGINALIZED WOMEN WITH CRAFT

A craft that has been practiced by women for generations is in danger of disappearing. In Libya, which has been marked by civil war and revolution for 10 years, the ceasefire since October 2020 has represented a glimmer of hope. We want to give this hope a direction with training in carpet weaving: low-income women and women affected by violence are empowered to build and maintain their own business Psycho-social counseling in a protected room. Because many women are traumatized by (sexualized) violence. To ensure a self-determined future for Libyan women, we promote both their economic independence and their mental health. The women themselves contribute to preserving the national cultural heritage of traditional Keleem production.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THANKS TO MENSTRUAL HEALTH: DIY NAPTURES FOR GIRLS IN UGANDA

In Uganda, girls miss up to 36 days of school per year due to periods. Reasons include a lack of education, the cultural taboo surrounding the topic, and a lack of access and availability of affordable menstrual hygiene products. The aim of the project is to reduce the number of school days missed by girls in several regions of Uganda by at least 30%. This is to be made possible through a 2-day health and educational training on menstrual health and hygiene as part of the income-generating programs of the Latek Stay Alliance Uganda, as well as a multiplication training with other girls in the village of origin. Here the girls also learn to sew reusable sanitary pads themselves from simple, locally available and inexpensive materials and to overcome period poverty.

RETORNO – RESTART!

The project “Retorno – Restart!” supports those children who fall through the system in rural areas of Nicaragua: illiterates, school dropouts, system breakers. More specifically, these are children and young people from ten villages who reach the two book buses from Puente Nica every week. When the bus arrives in the villages in the morning, the children are still at school - but not all of them. Those who drop out of the education system early have no chance of qualified work and a secure income, especially in marginalized areas like Cristo Rey. It is therefore very important to us to bring these children back into the local school system with a tailor-made educational project and to encourage them to make a new start.

EMPOWERING WOMEN FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT BY PROJECTING WOMEN ACHIEVERS

The project strengthens the role of women and girls in Indian society by telling Indian women their successful life stories through YouTube videos on social media. This means they can be a role model and inspiration to other people. The stories show that “women empowerment” has many facets - especially in the form of personal autonomy, but also in psychological, cultural, social, organizational and political aspects. Furthermore, the project tries to break down the prevailing image of women in India by encouraging women in particular in financial difficulties to reflect and empower themselves in terms of social relationships, physical freedoms, roles in the family and in society.

TRAINING FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FLY LARVAE AS SUSTAINABLE POULTRY FEED

High cost of poultry feed in Kenya poses major challenges to households producing poultry meat. Fly larvae as animal feed offer an innovative solution to this. With a nutritional value similar to that of fishmeal, the larvae offer an alternative to other protein feeds. The project therefore aims to use organic waste from households in informal settlements to breed fly larvae under controlled conditions. Project goal: (1) Cost-efficient feed for poultry production (2) Reduction of landfilling of organic waste (3) Reduction of CO2 emissions by reducing rotting processes (4) Improved animal nutrition (5) Establishment of small companies for feed production (6) Know-how transfer for larval production

NEW BEGINNING IN KANTAFU – WATER FOR ALL

In the year 20/21, a residential building was built in Kantafu, an outskirts of Nairobi, for a residential group with employment opportunities for young adults with intellectual disabilities who cannot be looked after and cared for by relatives after their school years. The newly developed Kantafu district is not connected to municipal services such as water, sewage and electricity. Our property already has a septic tank and a solar power generator, but the most important thing is missing: clean water. Our project consists of a deep well that ensures access to clean water for the residential group, the neighboring schools and other facilities being built. In total, around 1500 people in Kantafu will benefit from this project.

PLASTIC FREE SCHOOL

In Indonesia we have a particularly effective opportunity for intervention to reduce the risks of plastic pollution locally and globally. Our Plastic Free School program is designed to change one of the most critical factors contributing to plastic pollution: plastic habits. The aim of the project is that, as a result of the educational activities, our primary target group, school children, have a high level of awareness and knowledge about the risks of plastic pollution and that their plastic behavior changes sustainably. To do this, we train teachers (secondary target group) to be multipliers and give teachers the necessary tools (methods, teaching materials, modules) to enable children to have a plastic-free future.

SOCIAL INTEGRATION OF UNINTENDEDLY PREGNANT ADOLESCENTS IN BURUNDI

Unwanted pregnancies during adolescence often end girls' education in Burundi. This comes with the risk of being rejected by society and family because these girls are unmarried. The General Directorate of Basic, General and Pedagogical Education reports 2018 cases of pregnancy in primary and secondary schools for the 19/1.268 school year. In addition to a lack of sexual education, sexual assaults also contribute to this phenomenon. This is where our project comes into play with the goals of improving the mental health of those affected, reducing stigmatization and exclusion, promoting their family and social integration, thereby enabling their school or professional reintegration and promoting social cohesion.
