Journalists, exile and crisis areas

What challenges do female journalists face when reporting from exile and crisis areas? 17 journalists discussed this at a multi-day workshop organized by the Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ).

The participants came from Burundi, Tunisia and Germany. From their own experience, they reported on their experiences as journalists, but also on the consequences that the corona pandemic has had on them as women in their field of work. Other key questions were human rights and sexism. Restricted or even missing freedom of the press and freedom of expression was a very specific challenge that was a topic throughout the workshop. Some of the participants found themselves in similar situations.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the workshop took place digitally. Despite the resulting restrictions, the journalists were able to network with each other, which enabled a further exchange of experiences. It quickly became clear during the workshop that there is a need for this.

En outside, the freedom of the press and the freedom of opinion restreintes, voire inexistantes, ont constitué aussi a défi très concrete tout au long de l'atelier. Certain participants are reflected in the corresponding situations.

Due to the pandemic of Covid-19, the studio is now in the numerical form. In the end of the restrictions imposed, the journalists are on the same page when they come back, which allows them to change their experiences and enrich them.
