Help for self-help for people in Nawanyago, Uganda
Country: Uganda
Media actors provide information about land conflicts in Uganda from the perspective of those affected who have experienced displacement or who are threatened with land loss because companies with strong investments are claiming land for exports and climate certificates. Through fact-based information on precarious land rights for (potentially) affected communities and vulnerable groups, they learn about possible complaint procedures or ways of securing their access to land. Dialogue formats promote their participation in the fair negotiation of land rights conflicts and thus strengthen democratic participation in debates about their own rights/interests. The voices of civil actors such as environmental and human rights initiatives are better heard in media such as radio. This strengthens civil space and helps to resolve conflicts.
Climate change is having a huge impact on the Bwera community, which relies on agriculture and rain for its livelihood. Increasingly erratic rainy seasons are affecting harvests and thus income opportunities.
Trees have a positive effect on the microclimate and can mitigate the effects of climate change. That is why Fairventures Worldwide Uganda is working with the Bwera Tree Farmers Group and distributing suitable tree seedlings to 50 smallholder farmers. In training courses on agroforestry practices, the farmers learn how to integrate trees into their fields.
The trees planted will increase forest cover, mitigate climate change and improve the living conditions of small farmers.
Uganda-Hilfe Unterland eV has been supporting the St. Monica Junior School in Kasanje, Uganda since 2012.
At that time, the school had just 23 students.
In the meantime, with grants from SEZ bwirkung! Ausland, we have built over 1.000 m² of classrooms and increased the number of students to over 300.
To this day, the daily school meals for now over 300 students are prepared in a wooden hut measuring 3 x 3 m on two open fires.
Apart from fire protection, this is no longer possible with this number of students.
We would like to build a new, brick-built kitchen and furnish it according to today's standards (typical for the country).

Since the Ukraine war, there have been increased integration offers for refugees, such as tutoring and language groups for children and adults, as well as parent groups with psychological support. In the regional network against racism, we are committed to a diverse, open society and to fighting discrimination.
The project aims to improve general hygiene in the children's home and school. Illnesses such as diarrhea should be prevented. Less disruption to lessons, shorter waiting times in front of the toilets, avoiding relief outside.
Deepening knowledge of hygiene, washing hands with soap, pathogens, etc. as well as the use/keeping of sanitary facilities.
The plan is to build a toilet facility with 4 flush toilets and 2 hand wash basins. Two toilets are for the girls/women and two for the boys/men. Each toilet is equipped with a toilet seat for the sick and weak.
