Many people help together to achieve a common goal... ...that is the meaning of Naretoi, a word in Maa, the language of the Maasai people in Kenya. In the spirit of the word Naretoi, our association Naretoi e.V. supports the Maasai community on the edge of the Masai Mara nature reserve in Kenya, East Africa. Our goal is to support the Maasai's traditional way of life and ethnic identity while enabling their desire for education. Like many other ethnic groups in Africa, the Maasai are at the crossroads of society between modernity and tradition. Adult education Illiteracy among adult Maasai is very high, due to the cultural and traditional background of the ethnic group. Life as a self-sufficient herder and nomad was possible even without schooling. In the project, Naretoi e.V. finances a teacher who teaches reading, writing and arithmetic to adult Maasai people in the villages. The participants should be given the opportunity to further develop themselves based on the basics they have learned. Student project: Through our sponsorship program we want to give needy children from the Maasai community access to education. Children who do not go to school remain trapped in tradition and cannot participate in social and global change. We promote basic education in state schools so that children break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. After school training, we support you with further qualification measures, such as college courses or university studies. Promotion of women: In very traditional family clans, the Maasai are increasingly having problems providing enough for their extended families. Widows and their children are particularly affected. Since 2011, Naretoi e.V. has been handing over ewes to needy Maasai women in a project as a basis for building their own existence. The women join together in small cooperatives to share profits and losses with each other. Many people are now able to contribute a part to their families' livelihood through the milk and the income from the sale of the lambs.
