Stuttgart, November 08.11.2023, 9 | In his latest short film "Facing new realities - How climate change is affecting the heart of Africa," Burundian filmmaker Patrick Hajayandi impressively reveals the consequences of climate change in Burundi, Baden-Württemberg's partner country. The film premiere will take place on November 2023, 16 from 18 p.m. to 30:XNUMX p.m. in the Atelier am Bollwerk in Stuttgart. Interested parties can register free of charge.

In just 23 gripping minutes, the film encourages sustainable reflection on climate justice and shows what those affected are already doing. The documentary thus illustrates the effects of the climate crisis in Burundi, which are not only caused in the country itself, but also to a large extent in industrial nations such as Germany and regions such as Baden-Württemberg. The SEZ commissioned the film in close cooperation with the filmmaker Patrick Hajayandi in order to illustrate joint efforts for more climate justice and to raise awareness of the partner region in Baden-Württemberg. The documentary can be borrowed as educational material for schools and interested organizations.

On November 9, the Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) invites you to the film premiere of this documentary. From 16 p.m. to 18:30 p.m. there will be a film screening followed by a panel discussion in the Atelier am Bollwerk in Stuttgart. In addition to this program, there will also be a short report on current developments in the Amahoro state partnership.

Background to the partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi

For almost 40 years, the partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi has built a bridge that connects people across borders. In the 1980s, the Baden-Württemberg state parliament established cross-party relations at a political level. Over the years, official contacts have been interrupted, but the diverse private, religious and civil society partnerships have continued.

In 2009, the SEZ set up a coordination office for the partnership on behalf of the state of Baden-Württemberg. To deepen cooperation, the official partnership agreement between the governments was signed in May 2014. In addition to direct contacts with Burundi, the Burundian diaspora plays a central role in the partnership work as a bridge builder. In 2023, a delegation from Baden-Württemberg traveled to Burundi. In this context, an SEZ liaison office was opened in Bujumbura, Burundi. Next year, the political partnership will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Background to the SEZ

The Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) wants to sensitize the population of Baden-Württemberg for globally responsible action and show how everyone can do something for a fairer world. The foundation promotes and networks private, municipal and regional initiatives to improve and deepen partnerships with countries in the so-called Global South. In doing so, it strengthens the awareness of people in Baden-Württemberg for the global connections of local actions.
