Gitega is a town in central Burundi. Here, small farming families have come together to build their own coffee processing plant. This technical requirement as well as an independent fair trade certification were important building blocks for the processing and marketing of their coffee cherries. The dwp eG fair trading cooperative from Ravensburg imported the first fair trade container of coffee from Burundi in December 2014. It comes from around 700 members of the small farmers' cooperative “Mboneramiryango”. Fairly traded Burundi coffee is another building block for the partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi. It is now drunk in many authorities, church communities and factions in the country and offers small farmers in Burundi a livelihood.
