More than 40 years of partnership.
10 year partnership agreement.
1 Shared future.

In 2024 there is reason to celebrate:  Because Baden-Württemberg and Burundi have been following a common path for more than 40 years! What began as isolated contacts between people has developed into a broad network of active and committed people. However, one constant runs through the entire partnership: connecting people from both regions and thus enabling friendships and partnerships.

How it all began

The start of the partnership cannot be set to an exact year. Especially since Burundi was also a German colonial territory, which is why there are connections from that time. Rather, the partnership has developed bit by bit through relationships that were already formed in the 1980s and before that through political visits and return visits. By the time the partnership agreement was signed on May 16, 2014, there had already been a number of milestones that the partnership could look back on:

  • October 1963: Visit of the King of Burundi, Mwambutsa IV Bangiricenge, in Baden-Württemberg
  • May 1983: Visit of the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Burundi, Prof. Dr. Emile Mworoha, in Baden-Württemberg
  • 28. September 1983: Visit of Burundian President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza to Prime Minister Lothar Späth
  • November 1984: Invitation from Erich Schneider, former President of the State Parliament. D., to Burundi by the President of the National Assembly of Burundi, Prof. Dr. Emile Mworoha
  • October 1985: Delegation of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament to Burundi
  • 2009: Establishment of the coordination office for the partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi in the SEZ
  • 16. May 2014: Signing of the partnership agreement
  • March 2016: Foundation of the Association of Burundian Diaspora Germany (BDD) eV
  • October 2022: BW-Burundi conference and the start of the cluster work coordinated by the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry
  • June/July 2023: Delegation around Secretary of State Rudi Hoogvliet to Burundi
  • June 2023: Opening of the SEZ liaison office in Bujumbura

The Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) is entrusted with coordinating the civil society partnership and political cooperation is organized via Department 53 in the State Ministry. Read more about the signing of the official partnership agreement in May 2014.
